I årets Giro d’Italia har Team Sky et ekstremt sterkt lag. De var blant favorittene på lagtempoen, og i Richie Porte har de også en av de største favorittene i kampen om sammendraget.
Giroen er Portes store mål denne sesongen. Han ønsker – og må – vise at han kan levere jevnt i et treukersritt og kjempe om sammenlagtseieren. Alberto Contador er den største favoritten til å vinne giroen i år. Men den italienske grand touren er ikke det eneste store målet for spanjolen i 2015. Han ønsker å vinne både giroen og Tour de France. Ingen har gjort det siden Marco Pantani i 1998. Derfor foretrekker Contador å ikke grave for dypt i den siste uka i årets giro, uka som er den soleklart tøffeste i årets ritt. Han håper å komme til touren med gode bein, fordi det gjør sjansen til å slå Chris Froome større.
Når begge rytterne er 100 prosent, er Contador og Froome på et ganske likt nivå. Enhver mulighet til å tippe vektskåla i egen favør blir veldig viktig. For Sky er en mulighet til å sikre seg en fordel i Tour de France å gjøre giroen svært hard for Contador. In this year’s Giro d’Italia, Team Sky have an incredibly strong team. They were amongst the favorites for the opening team time trial and, in Richie Porte, they also have one of the top favorites for the general classification.
The Giro d’Italia is Richie Porte’s big goal of the season. He wants – and needs – to prove that he can be consistent in a grand tour, fighting for the overall win. To help him achieve this goal, Team Sky sends brilliant climbers like Mikel Nieve, Leopold König and Sebastián Henao to support him in the mountains. Add to this the two Belarusians; Kantstantsin Siutsou and Vasil Kiryienka and few teams will be able to match this firepower in the mountains.
The primary target is to put Richie Porte on the overall podium. Hopefully, on the highest step in Milano. To make this happen, Team Sky needs to make the race as hard as possible. Porte usually thrives when his opponents start getting tired. The harder the race, the better the Tasmanian performs. This is why Team Sky has so many strong climbers in the race.
Alberto Contador is the number one favorite to win Giro d’Italia this year. However, the Italian grand tour is not the only big goal for the Spaniard in 2015. Contador wants to win both the Giro and the Tour de France. Something nobody has been able to do since Marco Pantani did it in 1998. Therefore, Contador would prefer not to dig too deep in the last week of this Giro, which is – by far – the hardest week of the race. He wants to arrive at the Tour de France with a little bit of freshness in the legs. This will give him a better chance to beat Chris Froome.
When both riders are at 100 %, Alberto Contador and Chris Froome are at a very similar level. Any opportunity to tip the scale in your favor will be of huge importance. For Team Sky, one way to do this is by making sure the Giro d’Italia will be extremely hard for Alberto Contador. Of course, they want to win the race as well but the importance of a weakened Contador arriving at the Tour can’t be underestimated. No offense to the Giro d’Italia, which is my personal favorite of the three grand tours, but the Tour de France is still the most prestigious and the most important race in the world. Team Sky wants to win the Tour and their big master plan already starts in May.
Even if Richie Porte should crack during the Giro, I doubt we will see Team Sky slow down. With so many strong riders on the team, I’m sure they will continue to make the race as hard as they can. We might also see Movistar join forces with Team Sky, trying to weaken Alberto Contador. The Spanish team has Nairo Quintana as one of the top favorites for the Tour de France. It would also improve his chances of success significantly, if Contador isn’t at 100 % come July.
The good thing for Alberto Contador is that he has nothing to prove. He has already won all the grand tours multiple times. Succeeding at winning the Giro-Tour double would be a fantastic way of ending his career. However, winning the Giro and then only making podium in the Tour wouldn’t take anything away from his impressive career – quite the contrary.
Therefore, I think Contador will be very focused on winning the Giro, in order to still have the possibility to complete the double. This means that if Team Sky makes the race hard, Contador can’t afford to back down. Even though the Tour is the most important race for the sponsors, Contador has to win this Giro in order to keep the hope of winning the double alive.
For Team Sky, the scenario is quite the opposite. They don’t need to win the Giro. They need to win the Tour. Therefore, it’s much more important to tire out Contador in the Giro than it is to beat him here. It will be very interesting to see how the British team will employ this strategy during the following three weeks.
